Very touching, and thoughtful. I have found myself feeling much the same way towards Rose throughout his last years here. Thank you for this wonderful tribute in sharing how you helped bring Pete back through the Reds HOF, and how you used the idea from Cartoon Network - my boys grew up on that, too!
We both had our moments of hero worship - I'm @ 11 years older, and I got to see Rose play with the Big Red Machine as the Captain.
I remember Pete switching to third base at Sparky Anderson's request the 1st week of May 1975 - something Yankee Captain great Derek Jeter REFUSED to do throughout his career. Rose switched positions time and again For the GOOD of the Team, and this helped to solidify the Great 8, putting George Foster in LF and adding a potent bat!
The BRM took off shortly thereafter; taking 41 out of 50 games, the NL Western Division, the NLCS in a sweep of the Pirates, and World Series MVP ROSE and his .370 BA led Cincy to an exciting best-of-7 games Win over Boston's Red Sox! The Reds swept the 1976 NLCS and World Series, and the rest is history!
Yeah, Rose messed up several times, but he's OUR Charlie Hustle; I'm just sorry that he didn't get a chance for a HOF Plaque in this lifetime.
God bless and comfort the Rose Family over the death of Mr. Rose. He IS Missed.
I was a kid when Pete Rose made his debut. Even listening on my Dad's radio, his greatness came through. And when I watched on tv I knew he was destined for greatness. I was lucky enough to be at the 1970 All Star Game. Shortly after, Like the Big Red Machine, my future husband and I began our relationship that year. Many of our dates were him picking me up after work, and we would go to Riverfront Stadium. Some were twi-night doubleheaders. We watched many games from our apartments including the 1970 world series. In 1975 we took our firstborn to a World Series game. Over the years we took all 4 of our boys to many games in many stadiums. In 1987 our youngest won a contest sponsored by the Reds and our family rode in the Opening Day parade and he was given a uniform with his favorite player's #14. to wear to the game. He even grew his hair in Pete.'s style. Pete Rose gave our famiy so many great memories Thanks Cam for expressing the loss of Pete Rose so well.
